I'm the Israeli born daughter of two holocaust survivors (from Poland & Bulgaria) and was raised in west suburban Boston. I have lived in Santa Fe since 1994.
My paintings reflect my daily response to nature's beauty, her dynamic forces and the mystery of creation. I work plein air as much as possible and in all weathers, even if that means only sketching in my car. I think of nature as my collaborator deeply affecting me and the mediums I use, sometimes with surprising results. Recently I discovered, by accident, how to make ice crystal prints. A technique well known to watercolorists but new to me, these captured crystal patterns feel like a secret bestowed by nature.
As an abstract expressionist, I particularly enjoy the limitless additive and subtractive possibilities of water-media on clayboard. My paintings are the many-layered products of casein, watercolor, charcoal and acrylic. I prize mark making highly and allow my compositions to grow out of direct contact with my painting media. My tools tend to me non-traditional such as scrapers, cloths, sponges, palette knives and steel wool as well as masking tools such as rubber cement and acrylic mediums.
I am the Artistic Director of the Santa Fe Artist Guild and teach workshops on the nuts & bolts of exhibition to emerging artists. I own Straw House Gallery Fine Art in Amado, AZ www.strawhousegallery.org. The gallery was recently profiled in The Green Valley News and Sun, "An Oasis in Amado," by Ellen Sussman gvnews.com/articles/2010/02/25/news/26straw.txt.
