My workshops explore accidental procedure and abstraction through use of acrylic paint, acrylic polymers and other mixed media. Topics include: inspiring resists, abstracting the landscape/seascape, and painting with paper. All 3-day workshops are $500 per person.

Erie Sunset: A Painting with Paper Workshop. Ashtabula, OH
Any large body of water can haunt us with its mysterious beauty especially at sunset. The view conjures dreams, inspires creativity, and leads us to meditation. Lake Erie has long been a source of inspiration for American artists. Painting and drawing on its shores at dusk offers a unique entry to the world of abstract landscape. Join me on the shores of Lake Erie (and other locations around Ashtabula, OH) for three days of sketching, painting, critiquing and working with plant-fiber paper to create abstract landscapes of Lake Erie at its most magical. Desert Waters: A Painting with Paper Workshop. Santa Fe NM

There is a magical quality to water in the desert and we have several of these oases a short journey from Santa Fe. The Chama and Pecos rivers, Abiquiu Lake, the Rio Grande, Bosque del Apache and Elephant Butte provide excellent opportunities for painters to capture the magic of water in the desert. In this 3-day intensive workshop we'll explore the expressive possibilities of abstract desert landscapes while learning the layering and "mixing" capabilities of banana, mango and mulberry tree fiber paper. We'll practice a variety of under-painting techniques and mapping strategies and learn the benefits of a limited palette. Other topics include triangulated compositions, lessons from the masters, gestural use of media and more. Artists create 3 or more paintings a day and learn valuable critiquing skills for furthering their own work. We will be making day trips from Santa Fe as well as spending time in my art studio. Harness the power of negative space and the absence of color by masking areas of your work with a variety of media and acrylic. Rubber cement, marbles, acrylic polymers, plastic wrap, string, and tin foil are just some of the materials we'll use to create unexpected marks, zones and shapes. Whatever your artistic style or media, you are sure to be inspired by the effects you create and the artistic choices masking affords. explore mapping strategies, triangular composition, benefits of a limited palette and strategies for critiquing and furthering your own work. All landscapes, even highly realistic ones, capture only a tiny portion of nature's panorama of detail. In this 3-day intensive workshop we'll explore the abstract seascape at dawn and dusk while learning the layering and "mixing" capabilities of banana, mango and mulberry tree fiber paper.
